Sugar Glider Basics

Sugar gliders are tiny marsupials originally from Australia, Indonesia and New Guinnea.  They live in forests high up in trees.  In the wild, their average life span is about 5 years.  This is mainly due to the many predators they have there.  In captivity, they can live as long as 15+ years.   They have a gliding membrane and can glide up to 150 feet in the wild.  Females have a pouch they carry their young in.  After becoming impregnated, about 16 days later, a tiny joey about the size of a grain of rice travels up to the pouch via a path the mother has licked to help guide them, there the tiny joey goes into the pouch where it will stay until ready to greet the world (app. 70 days).  A female glider can have up to 4 joeys at a time but this is almost unheard of.  They usually have one or two at a time.  Joey's stay with the mother nursing and learning for about 8 to 10 weeks after coming out of the pouch.  (detached from the teat)  This is the OOP date.

NEVER EVER purchase a Sugar Glider less than 8 weeks old!  Make sure at that time the glider is drinking, eating and going to the bathroom on his/her own before you bring one home!

Sugar Gliders are NOT LEGAL in all states.   Some states that are legal have counties and cities within them that are NOT legal.   Make SURE they are legal in your state, city or county if you wish to purchase one!  If you are caught with a glider in an illegal state, city or county, the glider can be confiscated, you can be fined, imprisoned or both!

These precious animals are a commitment.  They bond to their person and to their mates for life.  They are NOT an animal to give away simply because you find you don't have time for them anymore.  Some will become so depressed, they will self mutilate, over groom themselves and some die.  If you decide they are the pet for you, make sure you have the time and money to invest in their care and give them all the love and understanding they deserve!  Not all sugar gliders will bond to you, know this before you decide to get one.  If this happens, know that you can still care for the glider without having that bond.  They are like people, they all have their own distinct personalities and may or may not like you at first, if ever!

Sugar Gliders are NOT rodents.  Their are NO similarities between a Sugar Glider and a rodent.  Not in diet, not in care.  Their teeth do NOT grow as rodents and must NEVER be "trimmed".  Doing so will result in massive pain and or death!  They cannot be left alone to fend for themselves.  You must be home each and every single night with them to feed them fresh foods.  They MUST be on a specific diet just for them.  There are many diets to choose from, however, you may need to change the diet if they won't eat the one you have chosen.

Sugar Gliders require extensive care and a strict routine.  They are not animals for young children as they are very fragile animals and can bite hard.  You will need to locate an Exotic Veterinarian BEFORE you purchase a Sugar Glider.  Make sure the Vet knows how to take care of them as not all exotic vets know about the care of a Sugar Glider.  Exotic Vets can be expensive!  You will need to have money put aside to take your glider to the vet if he/she needs to go either for regular checkups or in case of an Emergency!

Sugar Gliders hide pain very well and you may not always know if it becomes ill until it is either almost too late or is too late.  Sugar Gliders can SELF MUTILATE any site on their body that is causing them pain.  This would require your IMMEDIATE attention and a vet trip ASAP!  In this case, the glider would need an E-collar put in place to keep them from biting/tearing at the site of pain or injury.  Sugar gliders when in pain think they are being attacked and therefore attack what is hurting them.
